Indians are becoming increasingly travel-lovers over the years. Naturally, you will spend while you travel. Travellers make many mistakes when planning their trips. These mistakes lead to spending more than planned. Depending on how you travel, you can reduce your expenses a lot and save your hard-earned money.

Here are some common ‘travel mistakes’ that you should avoid to enjoy your vacation peacefully:

· Travelling during peak season:

In India, people usually travel when their kids have vacations. The months, April to June and October to December constitute the peak season in India. Naturally, there is high demand during these months. Hence, you find hotels, car rental companies, and airlines charging more. In addition, you have to contend with a heavy rush at the tourist destinations. So, if you are in a position to travel during the non-peak season, you should certainly explore this option. You will enjoy your trip better and save a lot in the bargain.

· Sticking to a particular airline:

There are plenty of airline options available for you online. Sticking to one airline does not pay many dividends today. No doubt, this shows your loyalty towards a particular airline, but you end up missing out on the lower fares offered by other airline companies. Yes, there are co-branded Credit Cards that offer you attractive airline miles. But, there is nothing wrong with keeping your options wide open. Do your research well and opt for the airline that offers the maximum benefits. The same logic applies to your hotel bookings as well. Keep your mind open and you will see a lot of attractive options coming your way.

· Not exploring the travel deal websites:

Indian travel websites have become very competitive today. You get attractive deals all over the place. You have websites that allow you to compare hotel rates on a single screen. Some websites provide lots of discounts when you book your hotel accommodations through them. There are other sites that give you attractive cash discounts and payback offers. Most of these websites offer attractive car rental options as well. Exploring such websites can help you save a lot of money.

· Being rigid with your travel destination:

It is a great idea to visit Darjeeling during October. But, can you imagine what will happen if everybody starts thinking along the same lines? You would end up having difficulties booking your travel tickets and finding accommodation. You should have an alternative destination in mind. There is a smaller hill station by the name of Kurseong, not very far away from Darjeeling. You can find cheaper accommodation and food at this place. Travelling from Kurseong to Darjeeling should not be an issue because there is a lot of traffic between these two places. This flexibility with your destination can help you save money.

· Missing out on the Credit Card rewards programmes:

People like to Apply for a Credit Card from multiple banks. It is not a bad idea at all as you are able to distribute your credit portfolio evenly. Secondly, you will be able to gain benefit of the Credit Card rewards programmes. You have the sign-up bonuses and rewards offered by the various credit card issuing banks. Taking advantage of the same is a good idea. But, you should be careful with your spending patterns. Access to multiple cards can tempt you into overspending. Maintaining financial discipline is important. Pay off the Credit Card balances in full every month and enjoy the full benefits these cards offer.

· Not saving enough for your trips:

Banks are financing tours and travel liberally these days. It is just like availing a personal loan. You also have facilities where you can apply for Credit Cards online. These are good avenues to rely on for financing your trips. But, there is nothing like saving your own money. Now, you know that you have to incur expenses on travel in about 8 to 10 months. You have estimated an expense in the range of Rs 50000. Is it not a good plan to save Rs 5000 per month for 10 months and travel debt-free? Of course, you will still have your credit cards should you need them in an emergency.

· Not taking travel insurance seriously:

If you travel abroad, it becomes compulsory for you to take travel insurance. Make it a habit to take travel insurance even while travelling inside India. The risk of losing your belongings in India is the same when compared to travelling abroad. Having adequate coverage is the most prudent thing to do. Understand the benefits of travel insurance. The premium you pay is negligible in comparison to the benefits and compensation you get. The biggest advantage is that you will get tremendous peace of mind.

These were some simple mistakes most of us commit while travelling. Avoiding them can help us save a lot of money in the bargain.
